Fifth International Guitar Competition Maurizio Biasini

Art. 1 - ORGANIZING COMMITTEE

The Musical Association “International Guitar Competition Maurizio Biasini” organizes the fifth edition of a competition for classical guitar performance. The competition is open to solo guitarists of all nationalities, born after 1 January 1985, who are at the outset of their career.

 

Art. 2. - APPLICATION

Application forms can be downloaded from www.guitarcompetitionbiasini.com.

           

The following documents should be submitted together with your application:

  1. Curriculum vitae (CV), in English.
  2. Documentation and copies of certificates concerning any awards, degrees, a few sample programs of concerts, reviews or any further documents supporting your application.
  3. A link to your audition performance (see Art. 5).
  4. Complete program of the music chosen to be performed. A copy of any unpublished scores must be included. No corrections and supplements will be accepted after 31 March 2020.
  5. Receipt of payment of the registration fee.
  6. Copy of an official identification document.
  7. A high-quality digital photograph (at least 300dpi) of head and shoulders only, which is uncopyrighted.

If you are a competitor residing outside of the European Union, you may have to apply for a visa. Please consult your nearest Italian embassy or consulate for advice. 

The personal data, provided with the application or in any other way will be treated according to article 7 of the Italian Legislative Decree nr. 196/2003 and will be processed both in written form and/or on paper, magnetic, electronic or telematic support only for purposes connected with the organization of the competition. The personal data will not be provided or made accessible to third parties except if required for competition's affaires. Art. 4 - SELECTION PROCEDURE

The preliminary round will be based on the Jury's evaluation of recorded videos containing the required program. All participants must accept, without appeal, the decision of the Jury, regarding admission to the competition.

 

Art. 5 - PROGRAM

The competition consists of three rounds: a preliminary round (through a video audition procedure), a semi-final round and a final round. At least 12 competitors will be admitted to the semi-final round. Subsequently, three competitors will proceed to the final round.

> Preliminary round

An unedited web-hosted video recording of an individual program of 18 - 22 min which must include one piece from each of the following groups:

Group 1.

J.S. Bach        one Prelude* or one Fugue (BWV 995, 996, 997, 998, 1000, 1003, 1005). *Prelude-Presto in case of BWV 995 and 996

J. Dowland     one of the Fantasies

 

Group 2.

M. Castelnuovo-Tedesco     one movement of the Sonata Omaggio a Boccherini or one Capricho de Goya chosen among n° 1, 2, 6,12,16,18, and 24

H. Villa-Lobos                       one Estudio chosen among n°7, 10 and 11

 

The recording should be taken by one fixed camera to give a front view with the applicant’s face and hands clearly visible.  Each piece of the program should be recorded without interruptions, while there may be interruptions between pieces. Please make sure your recording has high quality audio (we recommend using an external microphone and not the camera microphone). Videos must be recorded after January 1, 2018 and must be viewable in the US and in Europe. The recorded performance must not be edited or manipulated in any way, and the recording must be certified as to its integrity by the applicant. 

Competitors selected for the semi-final round will be notified by electronic mail no later than 17 May 2020.

 

> Semifinal round

An individual program of up to max. 25 minutes which must include 

  • the commissioned composition by Alex Nante (8 min), available to participants after completing their application
  • one major work or major part of a work of one of the following composers (min. 7 min, max. 15 min):

19th century

D. Aguado, M. Giuliani, J. K. Mertz, G. Regondi, F. Sor                       

 

20th century neo-romantic

M. Llobet, M. Castelnuovo-Tedesco, A. José, M. M. Ponce, J. Rodrigo

The program must include compositions of at least two different stylistic periods. Pieces played in the preliminary round may not be repeated. 

 

> Final round

The final round program includes two pieces:

  • the commissioned composition by Alex Nante (8 min)
  • one of the following concertos with orchestra:

          M. Castelnuovo-Tedesco        Concerto n°1 in Re, Op.99 (1939)

          L. Rodrigo                                 Concierto de Aranjuez (1939)

          M. Arnold                                  Guitar Concerto, Op. 67 (1959)

We recommend preparing also a free choice piece for a possible encore.

Pieces played in the preceding rounds may not be repeated. All solo pieces must be played entirely from memory. Due to the ever-changing COVID situation, and the extra challenges we are encountering in producing this year’s Biasini competition, the Jury has decided to allow semifinalists to play the commissioned composition Corren los Soles by Alex Nante from the score, if they wish. The Jury’s evaluation will be solely based on the performance of the piece, regardless of whether it is played from memory or reading the score.

Each finalist will have at least 60 minutes rehearsal time with orchestra on the day of the final or on the preceding day.

 

Art. 6 - COMPETITION PROCEDURE

a. The competition will be held from 2 to 6 October 2020. The candidates must register on Friday 2 October, between 17:00 and 19:00, at the International Museum and Library of Music of Bologna, Strada Maggiore 24, 40125 Bologna. To register, candidates must present a valid identification document.

b. On Saturday 3 October, at 9:00, at the International Museum and Library of Music of Bologna, there will be an orientation meeting at which the Jury members and the competitors will be presented.

c.The semi-final round will be held on:

3 October               10:00 - 13:00

14:30 – 19:00

4 October               10:00 - 13:00

14:30 – 19:00

The final round will take place on:

6 October                20:30

d. Performance order in each round will be determined by a random alphabet drawing.

e. The semi-final and final rounds are open to the public. Once a performance has started, there will be no access to the room.

 

Art. 7 - THE JURY

a. The international Jury will be composed of at least five (5) members from various countries and of established reputation in the music world.

b. The Organizing Committee may, at any time, call for new members to take part in the Jury or substitute existing members.

c. If necessary, the Jury may change the day or time of any competitor's performance.

d. Competitors may be interrupted at any time during their performance, if the Jury considers it suitable.

e. Members of the Jury who are currently teaching any of the contestants or have done so in the course of the year 2019 (from 1 January), must refrain from discussions and abstain from voting for their own student. The abstention shall be clearly recorded in the minutes. In compliance with this, during the first meeting, each member of the Jury must sign a statement as to his/her personal situation towards the competitors with reference to the above.

 

Art. 8 - ADMISSION TO THE SEMI-FINAL ROUND

a. The selection of the competitors to be admitted to the semi-final (at least 12, maximum 17) will be made by the Jury according to the sum of the scores received by each commissioner. The scores will remain confidential and will not be made public.

b. In the event of a tie, the President's vote will be decisive.

c. All competitors must accept, without appeal, the decision of the Jury, regarding admission to the subsequent round.

 

Art. 9 - ADMISSION TO THE FINAL ROUND

a. The selection of the competitors to be admitted to the final round (a maximum of 3) will be made by the Jury according to the sum of the scores received by each commissioner. The scores will remain confidential and will not be made public.

b. In the event of a tie, the President's vote will be decisive.

c. All competitors must accept, without appeal, the decision of the Jury, regarding admission to the final round.

 

Art. 10 - AWARDING OF PRIZES

a. The first prize cannot be In special cases, the Jury may award the remaining prizes equally. The Jury reserves the right not to award the first prize, in case the performances fail to reach the necessary artistic level. All prizes will be awarded in the final round.

b. All competitors must accept, without appeal, the decisions of the Jury, regarding the awarding of prizes. Winners intending to publish their results shall specifically mention the prize awarded, fully respecting the official decisions of the Jury. Special prizes will be awarded to the competitors at the Jury’s discretion.

 

Art. 11 - COPYRIGHT

All stages of the competition will be recorded. Participants agree to waive any recording and/or photo rights in or on any medium, during any aspect of the competition and consent to the unlimited and unrestricted use of their name and image in any format or medium for use by the Associazione Concorso Chitarristico Internazionale Maurizio Biasini.

 

Art. 12 – LEGAL AGREEMENT

By signing the application form, the competitor agrees to all rules and regulations as presented above. In case of any disagreement or differences of interpretation, the English text will be held as legally valid.

 

PRIZES

1st prize: € 12’000.00 (twelve thousand Euro) + 3 concerts: one in Bologna (I), one in Basel (CH) and one in Paris (F)

2nd prize: € 5’000.00  (five thousand Euro)

3rd prize: € 3’000.00 (three thousand Euro)

All awards are subject to applicable taxes.

All semi-finalists and finalists will receive an Honorary Diploma Award.
